We previously mentioned this software in brief back in December - I've not used it myself (since initially it was primarily intended to fix COM port mapping for Bluetooth GPS devices), but after seeing an article about it on Geekzone today I had another look. They've updated the software to include additional profiles for support of ActiveSync and use of a Bluetooth modem. This is a great addition, and simplifies many issues others have had with ActiveSync (discussed at great length over at PPCW.NET), as well as providing what is probably a better solution for use of GPS and modems via Bluetooth than those provided in upcoming ROM updates.
It also features the ability to switch Bluetooth on and off automatically, something which may be of particular interest (if I understand it correctly) to those who want Bluetooth to switch on only when an event, such as an incoming call, occurs to require it. Future functionality will include better support for Bluetooth headsets and network connectivity - both of which I'm sure all will welcome.
I really like the sound of this software, and I'll have to get my act together to download and try it out. I've really only heard great things about it, and I do recommend a look at it for anyone with a Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PC that may not work as well as they hope.
You can visit the developer's website here. It's currently free, but if you do download and use it, and find you're happy with how it works, please consider making a donation via the PayPal link on their site.
In somewhat related news - since in many ways Pocket Bluetooth Tools originated over there - XDA-Developers have been doing some great construction work on their site. Their forums have been seriously revamped, and now their website is geared more toward provision of news as well. It's a great development, and best of all - still free.
Unlike MTekk, they don't run any ads, but instead accept donations via PayPal - giving credit to those who have donated through stars. For a short time, they had a "beer" system running too, which I loved the concept for (give a "virtual" beer to someone who's helped you!) - but which seems now to have disappeared. Much like the ads with MTekk, the income is plugged straight back into the site in order to covers costs and help grow the community.
With all the help I've found over there over a year or more, I'll definitely be making a donation when I get a chance. XDA-Developers is one of the places I most commonly point people to when my own knowledge fails, and I'm glad to see them doing so well! If only I had time to read everything that went through there ... :-)
