Microsoft have already put up the Windows CE 5.0 Technology Preview download page referred to in yesterday's story, along with a summary of the details already provided in the press release:
"We are excited to offer a preview of the next major version of Windows® CE (previously code-named Macallan) to platform developers. For developers who are familiar with Windows CE, you will notice some significant changes to the product, and we think you will be impressed with what it has to offer. For developers who are new to Windows CE, we are thrilled to share this first experience with you.
This release focuses on reducing device manufacturer development efforts by providing efficiency features such as:
Development environment enhancements, which increase developer productivity
-
Built-in, extensive driver support, which enables out-of-the-box interoperability with multiple hardware platforms
-
Integrated innovation through advanced multimedia capabilities, including Direct 3D Mobile, which enable graphically intensive and rich media experiences for end users
-
Incorporated Windows Error Reporting, which allows you to simply and transparently identify operating system and application-level vulnerabilities after device deployment
-
Automated testing scenarios, which test the stability and reliability of the operating system image and applications in a single toolkit
Along with increased productivity and efficiency, we put some additional brawn behind Windows CE 5.0 to ensure that developers have the best possible development experience with Windows CE. Because device manufacturers constantly push the innovation envelope, their feedback throughout the creation of Windows CE 5.0 was critical. This feedback also helped define the Microsoft® focus on reliable computing, seamless device connectivity, and features that enable interactive entertainment on non-PC form factors.
Thank you for your interest in Windows CE. We look forward to seeing the amazing devices you will create with Windows CE 5.0. Look for the final release in summer 2004!

On April 1, return to this page to download the Windows CE 5.0 Technology Preview."
Given that this will eventually have a flow down effect to Windows Mobile (according to Janak at Pocket PC Thoughts, perhaps a year or two), it's an exciting opportunity for developers to get very early access to the next version of the platform. We might just see some majorly cool applications come out of this eventually!
