We reported yesterday that the Windows Mobile 2003 based XDA II may be receiving its first English-language update for users in the UK as early as Friday. It seems that this has had some confirmation, as well as the possibility having been raised of a slightly earlier release!
The XDA II UK ROM release may be posted to the O2 website as early as Wednesday, according to XDA Developers user fasteye. He has posted the Upgrade Instructions PDF, and I've extracted the new items and release notes for the document for your edification. It looks pretty nice, although there seems to be no mention of the RIM Blackberry software - it may be that this update is not in the new ROM, but in rather in a future update with a release yet to be determined.
Xda II system software upgrade
Major new items in this release include:
- Java Midlet Manager, allowing Downloadable Java games to be played
- Improved Support for network based O2 Active and O2 Video Downloads
- Microsoft Service Pack 1 for Windows Mobile 2003
- Updated MMS Composer
- Updated Caller ID software
- Upgraded support for Bluetooth Headset and Serial Port Profile
- Upgraded O2 Active software
Who should apply this upgrade?
This software will upgrade your Xda II System Software to v1.60.50, and the Radio version to 1.10. This software can only be used to upgrade devices sold by O2 UK or it’s partners. If your company has supplied your Xda II, you should contact your IT department in the first instance for support. This upgrade can ONLY be applied to Xda II, and not the original Xda.

Major Enhancements in Windows Mobile 2003 Service Pack 1
- You can send an SMS to ANY number in a contact, not just the Mobile number field
- Contact with + in SMS number is included when sending an SMS
- When calling a contact, the number is displayed during call initiation, then the contact name (on connection)
- The GeoTrust and M2M (Verisign, Baltimore) SSL certificates are now included in the Root store
- The .NET Compact Framework has been updated to 1.0 SP1
