The Pocket LOOX 400 appears in the FCC database!

Ed Hardy over at Brighthand initially reported a new Pocket PC in the FCC database which had no documents associated with it, and theorized that it could perhaps be a new iPAQ.

Brighthand's mystery Pocket PC unveiled - the Pocket LOOX 400!

After reading the Brighthand article, I decided to do a little searching of my own. The FCC database can be searched here. When searching on the Grantee Code (HTC is NM8), only four applications for 2004 were returned. One of these was a Class II permissive change for the HTC Himalaya (aka the XDA II and i-mate Pocket PC Phone), so I discounted that. The other three were for Original Equipment, and granted on 26th April 2004.

Two of these were for the same device, which would be indicative of separate approval for Bluetooth and WLAN capabilities. The two model numbers returned were NM8CB and NM8CBBT.

NM8CB is approved for operation in the ranges 2402Mhz - 2480Mhz and 2412Mhz - 2462Mhz. NM8CB is only approved for operation in the range 2402Mhz - 2480Mhz. This would be indicative of the two versions - one with WLAN and one without - reported by Brighthand.

A quick click through the External Photos revealed exactly what this device was - the Fujitsu / Siemens Pocket LOOX 400 series.

Not too long after I found this, Brighthand updated their article accordingly.

According to the manual, the base model includes Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi is an optional extra:

" Wireless connection via Wireless LAN (optional)

If your Pocket PC has an integrated Wireless LAN installed, you will find information on it in the help
file on your Pocket PC. In the same way as Bluetooth, you can also activate and deactivate the integrated Wireless LAN just as you wish.

  • Touch the WLAN Power symbol under Start - Settings - System. You can switch wireless LAN on
and off here. Bluetooth & Wireless Lan can cowork by time division multiple access mode
    "

You can see FCC database entries for the NM8CB - with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi - here, while the NM8CBBT can be seen here.

The specifications follow. The documentation does not include WLAN specifications in the technical data.
