At the request of the author, Damien, the review he did back in June of the TiVo has been removed. It seems that the group mentioned in the review have concerns about attention being given to their hobby, and are concerned about attention from various segments of the media. In addition, people associated with the group appear to feel that there were technical errors and outdated information in the review. Damien has therefore chosen to request the article's removal.
The discussion thread for the review will remain, since it contained additional information that may itself be of use.
This article has been revised after feedback from others, and after reading their mailing list. I agree now that I was somewhat harsh, and apologise for this. A couple of points:
- Removal of a review would necessitate an article to explain why it was removed, even if only to give us somewhere to redirect hits to that page rather than the user just getting a 404.
- Damien is an ordinary user of the website who contributed his own review of his TiVo conversion, presumably because it's something which he was interested in. We are happy to accept user contributions such as these, but we may not have sufficient knowledge of the product itself to catch errors such as those contained within the review. We'll have to work on that.
- The wording of his request to remove the review caused me to understand that the group was demanding the removal of the review. This in turn caused me to make somewhat harsh and uncalled-for comments based on my understanding of the facts. Thanks to several people drawing my attention to certain details, I now know that this was not the case, and accordingly have modified this article to reflect that.
- Damien should have asked the group to verify the review before submitting it to us, if that was what the group wanted. However, being uninvolved in the group or with TiVo in any way, there was no way for me to know of this before publishing. We will modify editorial policy accordingly.
