This particular Pocket PC Phone sure gets around ...

Demonstrating the currently prevalent philosophy of "Build once, brand many", the HTC-built Pocket PC Phone we've come to know as the MDA III, CU928, and XDA III, has now attained FCC approval under the FCC ID NM8HARRIER. The HTC Harrier is the CDMA incarnation of this device, while the GSM-based version known as the MDA III - and, it seems, soon to be XDA III - is the the HTC Blue Angel.

From the user manual, it looks like this incarnation of the device will feature a 400mhz processor, 128Mb RAM, 64Mb ROM, CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO, Bluetooth, SDIO slot, the sliding keyboard, a battery with marginally more capacity than the XDA II, and the 8 program buttons - but no Wi-Fi.

This is the same device that was rumoured to be released to Australia in August or September 2004 under an i-mate branding - let's hope!

Here's the thing: a CDMA version of this - even without Wi-Fi - is very cool indeed. I'd love to see it here, and hope that we will. It's only the GSM version that bugs me, simply because it's just too damn similar to the XDA II. However, I'm sure our US friends will indeed be happy even a CDMA version of  this device, given that the MDA II never actually made it!

Specifications as taken from the manual on the FCC website follow.
