Dave reviews a revolutionary BluTooth headset/handsfree that truly is Super!

Introduction
As some of you will know, I am an Xda II user, however I wouldn't call myself a heavy user when it comes to the phone component.  There are three distinct scenarios when I will get/make a call:
· At my desk/at home - I will use the phone held to my ear just fine.
· On the train - I will generally be listening to music or watching a movie and therefore will have the supplied wired headset available to talk.
· In the car - So far I have used the built-in speaker phone but this is not great and I often have to hold the Xda to my ear to hear properly which is obviously illegal.

I had heard the SuperTooth mentioned around the forums and had taken a look at the BlueAnt website to try and understand what it was but never really understood it!  The MTekk Moderators were kindly offered a SuperTooth for review purposes and we jumped at the oppurtunity.  Now MTekk may be great mates with Mr Gadget and he may have provided the review unit but we don't prostitute ourselves, giving glowing reviews in return for access to gadgets.  The following is my honest opinion of the SuperTooth.

What Is It and What Do You Get?
The SuperTooth is basically a BluTooth handsfree unit.  When a call comes through on your BT enabled phone it is transferred to the SuperTooth and its super loud speaker and high quality microphone.  It is obviously aimed as a car based handsfree unit, however, it can just as easily be used for conference calls around the home/office/beach/etc.  One of the great features of the SuperTooth is that it is portable.  If you want to take the Ferrari (or the wifes car) out on the weekend but still be able to make calls on the mobile then you simply need to take the SuperTooth with you.

The box comes jam-packed with goodies:
· The SuperTooth unit
· A mains power charger
· A car power charger for the cigarette lighter socket
· A clip for your sun-visor
· A wired headset unit for personal calls

The device itself has two buttons; one for answering/initiating a call and one to reject/hang-up a call.  There is also a volume control, a jack for the wired headset and two power jacks; one for fast charge and one for trickle charge.

The unit itself was definitely much bigger than I imagined and I really couldn't imagine carrying it around much however, this size is necessary for three obvious reasons:
· Large batteries for longer life
· Larger speaker for clearer, louder sound
· The ability to separate the loud speaker from the microphone

Performance
Call quality using the SuperTooth was truly amazing.  I never expected the sound to be so clear or for the volume to be turned up so loud.  Infact you could turn it up so loud it was annoying to have a conversation (which helps reduce your phone bill).  The device is fully duplex, which allows you to hear the othe party while still talking (i.e. When you speak the speaker doesn't turn off) and uses DSP technology to help make the calls clear.

I always made calls from within the car and found the sound quality to be amazing and clear with no complaints from other parties in the call.  Jackie mentioned degrading quality with increased distance between the phone and the device which I cannot attest to as I didn't really try but I can say the range was very good.  One day when I was making a call from in the house the call was transferred to my car out in the driveway (and I live on an acreage)!  The general range is specified to be 10 metres.

Battery performance is what has really blown me away with the SuperTooth.  I have charged it once when I first got it and it is still going after 20 days of being powered on.  I personally have made only about 2.5 hours of calls on it but I imagined have yet another device to charge every night but so far this is not so.  According to the user manual the SuperTooth is capable of 600 hours of standby or 15 hours of talk time.

Using It
Setting up the SuperTooth is really quite easy.  There are two supported BT profiles; handsfree and headset, so just about every BT phone is supported.  To bond the different profiles you just need to follow a particular sequence  of button presses which is well documented.  This was my first BT device and I coped very well.

Using the SuperTooth is as simple as pressing the answer button when a call is being received and the hang-up button to end a call.  You can also redial the last  number you called by pressing the answer button twice.  When the device is ringing/in-use the answer and hang-up buttons light up green and red respectively.

Unfortunately, when used with my Xda II, the SuperTooth will not allow you to use Microsoft's VoiceCommand although when/if the handsfree BT profile is made available I believe this should be possible.

Good:

  • Battery life
  • Quality of sound in calls
  • Portability
  • All the adaptors you get in the box
  • Loud volume

Bad:

  • The current tone the SuperTooth rings with is annoying.
  • Although the sun-visor is the logical place for the device in the car, I am quite tall and often hit my head on it when I lean forward (to check my mirrors etc.)

Overall:

The SuperTooth is absolutely a great device.  With the current lack of the handsfree BT profile, it is one of the only choices users of the Xda II and the Xphone have.  If you don't have a car kit or sometimes drive in different cars from day to day, I would highly suggest this device to you.

Dave's Score : 9.5 / 10 (fix that annoying ringtone for a 10 / 10)

The SuperTooth is available from Mr Gadget for $151.00 with free shipping to valid MTekk members.
