Xda II ROM Upgrade Possibly on the Horizon

Smoke signals are being sent from Europe that O2 Asia could release a ROM update for the Xda II. Should we get excited about landscaped screens and handfree BT profiles....

I just wanted to write a quick and dirty Editorial about some news I have seen posted over at TekGuru and PPCW.net.  It seems that O2 Germany have today released a new ROM upgrade for the Xda II and that O2 UK is likewise about to launch their upgrade.  Going of history, O2 Asia will likely make an announcement in the next week about the same upgrade to be launched over here, however, this is purely speculation on my part.

Anyway, you probably don't care who is doing what, more likely you just want to know what is in the upgrade, and will you get Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition with support for Landscape and the BlueTooth Handsfree profile.  Sadly, the answer appears to be NO.  This is merely likely to be an upgrade to ROM version 1.72, which has been available to i-Mate users for a while now.  Given that it has been over 6 months since the last O2 ROM release, I think we can safely say that Windows Mobile 2003 SE is a long way off for us Xda II owners, if it was ever infact going to be delivered.

But that is enough of whinge at O2.  Their last ROM release was pretty stable, and hopefully any upcoming release will also provide its user with better stability and functionality.  The list of expected fixes and enhancement includes:

  • Improved Battery Life
  • Improved MMS client
  • Headset Bluetooth bonding improvements
  • Bluetooth throughput improvements
  • Latest Service Pack 2 from Microsoft
  • Service codes added to Speed Dials
  • Call Waiting sound
  • Latest Radio version
