The PDA2K has been unleashed on Aussie soil and MTekk is lucky enough to have two users with one.
Below is a review that Ken (forum user alycat) has provided for us. It reflects his opinion of the PDA2K just 24 hours after getting his device. Also included are two photo's taken by Alex (forum user alexr) of his PDA2K, which he recieved this morning. Both devices were purchased earlier this week on Expansys.
"A few weeks ago I decided to start looking around for a PDA - the idea was to replace my mobile with one that could use Bluetooth for a wireless car kit, and also to utilise reminders, notes, etc, but I admit it, primarily it was to be a toy!
The XDA II got my attention early, and I had done some spec-checking, etc.. When I saw the i-mate PDA2k was available, I rang Expansys in Melbourne, to ask a few questions and to check availability. This was Wednesday afternoon, from Sydney. There were none in stock but in the shipment they were hoping to get that day there were two not already committed, so I ordered one, and was told if the order came in that afternoon it would ship that day and delivery was overnight (Melbourne to Sydney). "Yeah, right" I thought....just before I left work I got an email to say my delivery was filled, when I got home I got an email to say it had shipped and it was delivered to work the next morning --- amazing and very pleasing.
I had a quick look at it, it caused a bit of attention in the office, then I charged it up and played with it at lunchtime. Ok, bear in mind this is my first PDA, and really even the first time I have had a chance to even play with one. The look and feel is great, with a Windows setup it is very familiar, etc.. Most of the use is fairly intuitive (manuals? they are those things I read after I can't figure out something, not before...), so I swapped the SIM card from my old mobile and went out to buy lunch, and decided to ring my wife - pull out the qwerty keyboard....try to enter numbers....try to enter numbers... give up and use screen keyboard, very easy, stylus is great, and I can even just use a finger (no, for the screen!!). Phone all works ok, and when I get back to work I looked at the manual, to get the "numeric keypad" to work it is function pushed twice or something....
Last night I went through the manual, and also spent some time playing with it. I copied my contacts over from the SIM card into "Contacts" and added a lot more, all very easy. I then played with a lot of settings to get the device set up more the way I wanted it, all very easy and configurable.
One thing I had been worried about was what I thought would be a pull out keyboard, it would be "plastic" and likely to fall off --- far from the truth, the PDA is sort of split into two and the screen slides up, all very easy and with a robust feeling.
Where to from here? Over the weekend I want to explore some more features, setup the sync software on my laptop, backup up the PDA to the laptop, set up some wallpaper files from my laptop and install them on the PDA. I also want to look into programs (MIDlets are they?) and see what are available, I have a few things I want, and I see someones's signature refers to their website for this info!!! I want to look into different ring tones for a few selected people.
And the things I don't like? It feels a bit bulky in my hand when using as a phone, guess I have small hands and this would apply to most PDAs. I feel a bit scared I am going to drop it, and I am looking to get a cover and a cord. I am also going to see about a screen protector - something great about these toys, not only do you get to buy one, you get to buy more toys for your toy!! The PDA came with a leather "case" which I find bulky and hard to to use, and I have seen references to a "plastic" stretch type cover and also a "metal" one. I am not sure how these would go with the slide out keyboard.
And I have to work something out with the phone. It seems if you push the "phone" button it displays the phone software and push it again it rings the last number dialed....got to work after running the last 6k as I do each day and the phone in my backpack had dialled my wife's mobile a few times.....
Oh yeah, my laptop/desktop Windows, "Start" is at the bottom and the menu comes up the screen, still to work out if I can do that on the i-mate.
Overall, extremely pleased, great piece of hardware/software and great delivery.

A huge thanks go to both Ken and Alex for the amount of time they have put in to showing us their new devices. We all know what it is like when you first get them. The last thing you want to do is put them down just to right some text. Thanks guys.
