A little more background to the Pocket Plus hard-reset problem of the O2 Xda II

We're all familiar with the spate of hard-reset problems associated with Pocket Plus and the recent (later than 1.60) Xda II ROM.  I recently contacted the Pocket Plus developers regarding their current build (2.2) which only installs to Main Memory and has lost the Storage indicators, I've have just received the following reply...

"The current build of XDA II ROM contains a bug that can cause a hard-reset when a program reads data from a storage card. Due to the bug in ROM, accessing storage cards may cause complete data loss on XDA2 compatible devices. More often it happens with programs that access a storage card in a timer (like Spb Pocket Plus). There are no known solutions for this problem so we have had to disable the showing storage cards indicators on XDA II. We'll enable this feature when HTC fixes this bug in their ROM.

Pocket Plus is a system tool that is loaded before storage card drivers on some devices. Installing Pocket Plus onto a storage card may result in various problems with Pocket Plus operation, as well as affect overall system performance. That's why you can't install it onto a storage card."

This is also now detailed on the Spb Pocket Plus Support page: ROM bug and Install location.

So it appears that the shoe is very much back on the O2/HTC foot to come up with a decent fix for this and release a new ROM to address what appears to be a very fundamental and potentially wide-spread problem with their code.  O2/HTC have been very lax and reticent in their support of the Xda II, with few bug fix releases and even less improved functionality (e.g. bluetooth hands-free profile).

Spb Software House have suffered some significant bad press about this problem since it was Pocket Plus which unfortunately highlighted the issue but was not necessarily the cause.  They deserve credit for identifying the problem and finding a workaround which will happily bring Pocket Plus back onto the Today screen of many disappointed users.

O2/HTC should lift their game to the Spb Software House level and support those customers who have handed over as much as $1,500 for a flawed device, rather than turning their backs on them as soon as a new device is launched.

I've contacted O2 Asia regarding this.  It will be interesting to see if/when I get a reply and, if I do, whether it is the standard bland, pre-defined waffle or something with some actual information in it.

My $0.02
