My gut told me that the MDA III (Xda IIs) was only a small evolutionary step. With the announcement of the MDA IV by T-Mobile, a giant leap to PDA Phone heaven has been taken.

I opened my browser this morning to some of the greatest news possible.  BargainPDA were running a story about T-Mobiles official announcement of the next version of the MDA line of devices, the MDA IV.  Upon reading the article I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and then I had to take a tissue to wipe up the drool that had dripped out of my mouth and onto the keyboard.

The MDA IV has the following featureset:

  • VGA Screen,
  • 530MHz CPU,
  • Bluetooth,
  • Wi-Fi,
  • Built in Keyboard,
  • Twist screen (i.e. a tablet PC mechanism),
  • Tri-Band GSM Radio,
  • 3G Compatible Radio allowing video calls using one of the two inbuilt cameras.

Apparently, T-Mobile plan to release this device in Germany in summer, which is June/July time given the northern hemisphere location but I would say expect it to really be a little later based on previous experience.  Typically, O2 release the same devices as T-Mobile, but under the Xda brand and I am certainly hoping they follow suit with this device.  It definately the most promising device ever announced and easily tops the MPx which is expected from Motorola some time soon.  This does make me wonder how much memory the MDA IV has though given I haven't found any mention of it on the Web.  Lack of memory is the biggest limiting factor of the MPx and will probably be its downfall.

The entire press release from T-Mobile is available here.

There are further photos (including a slightly closer look at the keyboard) available on Tekguru and many other sites around the web.
