Dan reports back after being invited to the O2 launch of the Xda Atom.

I just got a phone call from Dan Mercer, forum moderator 'recrem', as he travels home from O2's launch of the Xda Atom.  He gave me the details of the Atom following todays adventure and he is very excited about it.

He asked me to put the following info on MTekk, but as I am super busy today I am struggling to find free time.  I have decided to put the info up quickly now and hope to pretty it up later (or another moderator will beat me to it).\

The product launch itself was onboard a boat on Sydney Harbour, and introduced three devices.  For the record, the other two were the HTC Wizard and I think the HTC Tornado (but everyone wants to know the most about the Atom).

Basically, the details are as follows:

  • Dan believes it to be very small, smaller than the mini in his opinion.
  • The screen is very crisp.
  • The headphone jack is 2.5mm
  • The onboard radio is very good.  I gathered that the speakers were good too, as Dan was saying even though the DJ was playing loud music, he could listen to the radio (just).
  • Dan didn't think the radio needed the headphones to pick up a signal.
  • The device comes with Windows Media Player 10, and the O2 media software.
  • Windows Mobile 5 is cool.  It is very easy to use one hand, though you need to tap the quick buttons on the screen itself.
  • The device is made by Quanta, designed by O2 and hence will be an O2 only device.  There will be no i-Mate, QTek, et al version of this device.
  • The device will go onsale locally on December 8th.

Hopefully, I didn't miss anything, but if I did, feel free to ask.  Also, Dan has some photo's but he can't put them up until after he finishes work tomorrow.  I for one can't wait.
