Review of the Dopod P800W

Forum user alexr provides their thoughts on their new Dopod!

Having had the Dopod P800W for a few days now, I am pretty impressed overall. Purchased form Ryda (mainly a car audio store) for $1,129 – they also provided me the wrong SD card – and had no 2GB micro in stock when I queried this the next day.

You get a heap in the box; USB synch cable (but no cradle – disappointing as my iPaq six years ago had one), car charger, stereo headphones, car suction cup mount and pouch

I also got the PapaGO Software as a bundle for which you need a Micro SD card.

I’ve had an iMate PDA2K for two and a half years, and despite its bulk, has been a great phone and PDA. I toyed with the idea of getting a Bluetooth GPS receiver numerous times, but was just something else to worry about. I have been waiting for the Nokia N95, but this has been delayed numerous times, so they miss out on a sale.

Strengths of the P800W include; size, look, weight, scroll wheel (same as iPod) and lanyard attachment.  GPS connects indoors (few metres from a window and within a minute), FM Radio, Windows 2005 Mobile takes a bit of getting used to and has many improved features including Audio Manager which is a full Music Player library cataloging system. Also has voice commands but I haven’t used this yet.  When I was unpacking it, I couldn’t believe how light the phone was, the battery must weigh close to half the 120grams.  Was dubious about service of a new brand, so called Dopod, and spoke to someone in Australia, in regards to largest capacity memory card.

Some negatives; Already had to reset a few times to get WiFi to work, speaker is at the back of the phone, when in GPS mode, hitting the “explorer” icon will take you to the GPS screen. The benefit of the scroll wheel is not much of an advantage when surfing websites as you can’t move across wide pages without the stylus.

Charge and headphones share the same port – don’t know what they were thinking there – so unable to charge phone and talk on it whilst in the car (must be pushing me towards the Blueetooth headset I haven’t got)  Also, the port is non standard – mini USB for synching, but different again for headphones. Headphones act as an aerial for FM radio, so they must be connected even if using the phone loudspeaker.  On board memory = Storage 37MB and Program 48MB (PDA2K = 62.8 + 62.8). Stylus pretty small at only 87mm. If you need to get the micro card out it is a major operation; battery, SIM needs to be unlocked and then delicately slide card out of it’s locking clip.

Have used the PapaGO software, and it does the job.  Based on whereis so that seems to work fine for me in the past, and has many POI’s (550,000) - I’ve taken them all off for now.  Took about an hour to register, load maps and get it all working.  And from FredS’s review of PapaGO - as you load each state individually, there will be an issue when crossing state borders – easy to go back a menu and select new map.  They have also supplied interconnecting maps on the install CD but these are 100MB as compared to around 50MB for the (large) individual states (PapaGO site advised processor speed may be compromised – doesn’t run the fastest with the 50MB maps so leaving it by state).  Total size of package as I’ve installed is 253MB – but with memory being pretty cheap now ($68 Exp. Post delivered for a 2GB card (NOT from eBay) I can also put a few hundred songs on as well). Few annoying things like, being told my speed is excessive every couple of hundred metres (hope I can turn that off) and the search/find function seems to be complicated, as you need to know if it is a street or a road etc and it lists the Street, Road by suburb, you can’t search partial street name and suburb – only by area/region.  Maybe there is more that I’ve got to learn, but not as quick as others I’ve used.  Install CD comes with a 62 page PDF manual (that could have been about thirty pages if they wanted to compress it a bit, and removed half a dozen pages about safety and driving whilst using a GPS).  There is no phone support – all done via email. And you can’t view any of the PapaGO maps on your PC, but I’ve always used whereis so can always go back to that for more size if needed.

Miss the keyboard from my PDA2K, but the size and weight is the compromise and more than happy with the P800W.

I give this device a 9 – a bigger MP camera and a joystick as well as the scroll wheel and it would have been a 10!
