We've performed one major and one minor site update during the last month - the major one was to bring the site software up to date and fix a number of bugs, and the minor one was to improve performance.
The major update was pretty traumatic, since it involved resolving a number of issues that had arisen from the move of databases and the original migration from the old site software. We had to rollback from the first attempt, in spite of development of a comprehensive update procedure, and extensive testing. It was easy enough to identify the cause, and modify the procedure accordingly - but it just goes to show that even the most careful testing can be brought undone by missing the most minor of details.

You might have noticed a bit of a change to the look of the site. Hopefully it's a change for the better. There's more to come, but we figured that we might as well make a start.
It's made for a bit of reshuffling in how pages are organised, but overall there's very little change to functionality - more than anything this change has to do with looks. Improvements to functionality will come too, but all good things take time.
So what do you think? Do you like the changes? I'd be interested to hear from you!

Nope - apparently at least some users wanted to see the whole release. I guess I could point to the original release but it doesn't take that much to format for the site.
Well, it's updated now to include the press release, so enjoy (?)

I hope you like the new site and software. It's not perfect - we were
going to develop it over a few months - but given the defacement and
our efforts to get it back up and running as soon as we reasonably felt
we could do so.
We had an early warning of the defacement - a menu item that linked to a pretty disturbing site suddenly appeared on the main menu - it seems it wasn't always visible due to some of the site design though. I made the wrong decision on what had caused it, tightened some custom code that had been written for the site administration, and left it at that.
Not long after on a Sunday morning I awoke to SMS messages and emails from our team to tell me that the site was defaced altogether. The content related to some current world events on which I have no reason to comment, and while aggravating I had no reason to do anything but work on identifying how it was done and how to recover.
I haven't emphasised it, but it was a deliberate ...

I have removed the old blog links. They're still actually there for now, and if you really really want to see them, here's those links:
