I bought the TomTom One XL last year from Tandy, and earlier this year started having problems with it. I got them sorted out for the most part myself but there was a persistant problem with the usb socket, in that the connection wasn't steady.

I took it back to Tandy, who sent it to TomTom in Sydney, and waited EIGHT WEEKS for it to return , within a day the problem had returned. Now it wont accept a connection at all, so i can't charge it up, add anything or update it.

Anyone know of a suitable repair centre in SE melbourne who can fix it for me? I'm not sending it away again

I don't blame you thats a pretty poor effort.

Unfortunately I don't know of anyone in Melbourne.

Cheers

Cheers Fred.

I've listed it as a job on servicecentral.com.au so hopefully I can locate someone and get the job done.

I hadn't come across service central before - interesting...

If the unit is still under warranty though, you'll end up paying. Myself, I'd take it up with trading standards and take out a claim through the small claims court against TomTom for loss of use.

Look here for my articles and hardware & software that I recommend.

The Doomsday Clock - It's five minutes to midnight - think about it... do something about it!

Psion II CM -> Psion II XP -> Psion II LZ -> Psion 3 -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II -> O2 Xda IIi -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II + Nokia 3310 -> Dell Inspiron 9400 running Ubuntu + Nokia 6234 (no more Windows Mobile for me!)

My new device is Linux based and it doesn't include a camera, a phone or an MS operating system! Oh, and I also have a Topfield PVRt, a TomTom ONE and a Wii - all of which also use nice, stable Linux... luxury!

xraydelta1,

It should be under warranty. Some of these devices have a 2 year TomTom factory warranty.

By going through Tandy you may have saved on postage but then lost 8 weeks of use.

Simply ring TomTom Support on the number provided in this forum (toll free) and they will provide an RMA number and the address (think it is 1/339 Pacific Hwy, Artarmon NSW) to send it to.

The usual turn around time is 5 days to a week.

I have recently had five of the work units repaired, with differing problems from batteries to motherboard replacement and one needed a new TFT screen. In each case the original unit was returned, but where the motherboard had been replaced it had a new device code. Each had a detailed note on repairs effected. If you had map upgrades, it comes back reverted to its standard configuration at purchase - so that might need some sorting out.

For all the criticism they get, I have never had a bad experience with the support guys regarding hardware and after the first computer voice answering the phone, you do get to speak to real people.

Waiting for free map updates is a different story, but they are worth talking to.

Sending it away or doing it yourself only leads to a void warranty.
