Hi all

I have a Dopod 838 Pro with WM6 and I am after a program to compress or convert DVD movies to a format which I can watch on my PDA.

What is the best and easiest to use?

Any help to new user would be welcome

Peter

My recommendation would be the AVS range of tools (www.avsmedia.com). Not too sure on converting direct from DVD, but will take any other video, compress it (mightily) and allow it to be played on your PDA - I have a Dopod 810 & have used this fine software for this and the XDA Mini I had before. Its reasonably cheap and works like a dream. I now use it for compressing client videos for use in eLearning courses as well.

Peter,
If you're after a free package, I use PocketDivxEncoder and it's very good...sounds similar to mlk's suggestion of AVS as it lets you compress the files quite substantially (I got a movie down to 109mb for a plane trip once and it still had decent quality). It also lets you select the dvd files themselves as opposed to shrinking an mpeg or avi file. One thing to remember though is that any DVD you buy from a store that you want to compress will be encrypted, and to compress it you will first need to decrypt it. I've used DVDShrink (freeware as well) for my movies in the past and it works really well.

Both are freeware, with the only downside that it's a two step process, but for the emount of times I do it, the small hassle is worth it given the zero cost.

Hope that helps...

I tried to install the PocketDivxEncoder and it kept on saying that I was missing the win.32 file?

What do I need to do?

What O/S are you installing to? It should work fine with XP and 2K but I can't say about Vist-ugh.

Mike

Look here for my articles and hardware & software that I recommend.

The Doomsday Clock - It's five minutes to midnight - think about it... do something about it!

Psion II CM -> Psion II XP -> Psion II LZ -> Psion 3 -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II -> O2 Xda IIi -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II + Nokia 3310 -> Dell Inspiron 9400 running Ubuntu + Nokia 6234 (no more Windows Mobile for me!)

My new device is Linux based and it doesn't include a camera, a phone or an MS operating system! Oh, and I also have a Topfield PVRt, a TomTom ONE and a Wii - all of which also use nice, stable Linux... luxury!

Using XP at home, I will try to reinstall the XP disk and see if it fixes it

Try re-downloading it too, could be a duff build/installer.

Don't use WMP, get a copy of TCPMP (Google for it) - it is vastly superior to WMP and supports far more formats, AVI included.

Other than suggesting you keep your hand still(!!!), I'm afraid I can't suggest anything - you're on newer hardware than I had and that's not a problem I saw. Have you checked the encoded version plays ok on the PC?

Ahh, I think I know what is causing that...go to Options (bottom of the screen) and select Video - one mine the default was ATO IMAGEON Decoder.  Try selecting just ATO IMAGEON, or GDI (sorry, I can't  remember...it might even be DirectDraw) and that fixes the problem.
