Don't know if you guys know, but I was the first in Australia to get Telstra iPhone 3G.

I only camped because I didn't want to miss a day of work (very expensive as an IT contractor consultant and director). My idea was to get it then zip home for shower and breakfast. Little did I know what was to follow...

Check out the full story at my website

Oh and it is a beautiful device. Better than all my Palm and Windows Mobile phones together...

Oh wow Mr_G!

I'm afraid I'm not in the same league as you - actually not even in the same State- , But good luck and enjoy.  It does sound pretty good.

I suppose all my old quotes about the iPhone will come back to haunt me

Cheers

Oh no, Mr G's become an applet!!!

Sorry but if ever I were first in the queue for something and the media came along, they'd get a polite but firm "bugger off" from me. They can stick their noses elsewhere, don't care which self-centred, egotistical, pseudo-celebraty it was.

Mike

Look here for my articles and hardware & software that I recommend.

The Doomsday Clock - It's five minutes to midnight - think about it... do something about it!

Psion II CM -> Psion II XP -> Psion II LZ -> Psion 3 -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II -> O2 Xda IIi -> Psion 5 -> O2 Xda II + Nokia 3310 -> Dell Inspiron 9400 running Ubuntu + Nokia 6234 (no more Windows Mobile for me!)

My new device is Linux based and it doesn't include a camera, a phone or an MS operating system! Oh, and I also have a Topfield PVRt, a TomTom ONE and a Wii - all of which also use nice, stable Linux... luxury!

Given the build quality of Apple's other hardware it's probably in for a warranty claim heh heh.

Alright, enough sledging...Arnold, spill the beans - what's the verdict on the new toy??  Was it worth an arctic Melbourne night of camping out?

I finally saw one today - a colleague has one. It was heavier than I expected, looked as if it should be lighter, given the apparent thickness (or thin-ness).

While I'm happy to acknowledge that the interface is very swish, I was disappointed how grubby such a new device looked specifically because the entire front is glass and was covered in fingerprints. I also didn't like the button, again I would have expected a touch button rather than a real one.

My feelings were much the same as those for the iPod, I can get a "generic" mp3 player that does all I need, doesn't limit me with artificial restrictions and costs a whole heap less. Sure it may not be as flashy but I'm not looking for that.

So all up, given my brief opportunity to play with it, I'd give it a Meh! out of ten.

I haven't seen the iPhone as yet but...

I tried something out a while ago that required iTunes, plus an iTunes account. No problems I thought - I'd sign up and try it out. Well, when it required a credit card number to create an account I declined. I have read that the iPhone needs to be unlocked by iTunes before it will work, and that you need an iTunes account... If this is true, I will never entertain the idea of considering the iPhone!

I think I'll keep a look out for a neat linux device, possibly like mtb might be.

The iPhone 3G is unlocked / activated in store this time around. In order to trasfer anything to the device you must have an iTunes account.

I've played with an iPod Touch and they're snazzy. The UI is nice, the device looks fine. It doesn't wow me, but it does work almost exactly as they say it will, which is refreshing.

the iPhone shows that if a company really wants to make a device that's pretty close to flawless in its operation it can. Hopefully this should create some really nice alternative devices from competing companies which will be more up my ally.

I've never bought anything from Apple since the Apple ][e and it'd have to take something pretty snazzy to change my opinion of them.
