It looks nice, but it also looks HUGE!!!!!! for a pocket pc. It is definitely intended as a portable data device, rather then a phone.
Personally, if I was going to go for something like that, I'd probably just buy a UMPC. That way you get full Windows OS as well. |

Have studied this beauty for a long long time, and have even make up a box with exactly the same dimension and put it in my pocket - just to get a feel of the size.
Yep, this is definitely the one I'm upgrading to. There is NO other options for me in the market at this stage.
- It is the ONLY PPC with 8 GB microdrive and 4 GB mini SD. It is the ONLY PPC which supports SDHC. Why is this important to me? Well, I'm addicted to my Wikipedia database (itself is about 4GB). I also use my PPC as my MP3 player, and if you have 40GB in your iPod, how do you live with just 4GB, which is the max with all other PPC these days? - It has the latest GPS SiRF star III processor. Time to retire my SiRF GPS from Mio. The idea of using blue tooth and a separate GPS receiver does not work for me. I play golf with my PPC, and use it to record my score, to provide a map of the golf course (very useful for new courses), and to tell me distance from any point to any other point on the golf course. With the gorgeous 5 inch screen, I can have my score card and the layout of that hole side by side! - It has the latest phone (3.5G), and gives me the option of surfing internet at a speed more than 3 times my home ADSL. If I get on to the telstra next G, it is going to be at least 40 times faster!!! It has a very useable screen size, and a fantastic sensor motion to screen the screen to any direction - by merely tilting it! - You can make SKYPE call on this phone. - The 3 MP camera is even enough for me to go for vacation and leaving my normal camera behind. The quality of the image is just unbelievable. Best thing is, you have all the storage space to keep them, and not having to download into DVD during the trip. - The processor speed, size of RAM and ROM is also the best money can buy for a PPC today.
Is it perfect? No, I don't think it is. My main disappointments are: It's LCD screen has no backlit.(edit: not correct,it has backlight) It's keyboard needs getting use to. It should have used solid state CF cards rather than microdrive. Finally I wish it is lighter, not that I can't live with the existing weight.
But, it is the most perfect all in one PDA for me at the moment. I don't need to carry a phone, a PDA, and an iPod separately. If I think of this as a phone, then surely I won't buy it. However, if I think of it as an all in one communication device, then my view changes. It is lighter than a phone, PDA and iPod combined!!
I'm itching and dying to get my hands on this baby. Which retailer will approach Dopod and bring it into Australia? HTC will not market it here, but may be Dopod will. Without Dopod wanting to sell it here, there will be no local warranty. This is the biggest problem preventing me from buying it from overseas. |

Seems like the ideal device for you then eaglesteve, im not sure those reasons or an addiction to a database would warrant my purchase of the device but each to their own. Your correct that it wont be sold under HTC, as HTC does not sell products in this region, however, HTC having a majority stake in Dopod sell the rebranded HTC products under the Dopod Monikor.
Reports seem to allude to it being released here, however only a few of the preferencial online suppliers would stock it. I would suggest your best bet might be purchasing it from our Asian neighbours and seeing if Dopod will honour the warranty. Alternatively HTC to provide an International warranty so if you imported a HTC device and by chance is happened to have an issue etc all you would have to do is send it off. Not entirely convenient but thats the breaks of living on this sunny little continent. |

Dopod too will not provide warranty locally. Both HTC and Dopod cautioned that it may not work in the Australian 3.5G network, as they have not done the testing yet. Not being a technical person, I don't understand why each telco's network has to be individually tested. Are 3.5G phone suppose to work in all 3.5G network throughout the world? If there is a chance that some 3.5G network will present problem, how can we be sure that our phones can roam overseas? Don't understand this one. Perhaps some network engineer with some telcos out there can enlighten us.
For the time being, perhaps I should still wait for a PDA/GPS/Phone/Camera that supports SDHC. Unfortunately none is in the market, other than Dopod U1000. |

you are new at this aren't you? Telco companies and even the manufacturing companies never tell you the full capabilities of their devices even though they know full well what they can do. Classic example is HTC and Dopod both rejecting that the Trinity had a GPS chip. Other examples are Telstra suggesting that the Dopod 838 Pro wouldnt be compatible with their network when its.....you guessed it the exact same model as the jasjam.
Telstras 3G network runs on a 2100MHZ band and the 3.5G runs on the 850MHZ band. The GSM and UTMS specs of the U1000 are: GSM/GPRS Quad band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz HSDPA/UMTS Tri-band 2100 MHz and 850/1900 MHz
From this we can conclude that the device 'would' be capable of running on their networks. The problem of course is configuring it to the networks which for 3G wouldnt be a problem and perhaps accessing the 3.5G wouldnt be an issue either but accessing Telstras nextG content would be the problem. |

That indeed is new to me.
I'd be really pleased if there is no technical issues. I suppose Telstra would not object to me bringing my own phone (Dopod U1000) and get on one of the plans, would they?

They wouldn't object, Steve. Just don't tell them - especially if it doesn't have the Austar tick on it. They may even give you a phone that you can eBay or keep as a backup.
Good luck with it. I'd like to see one of these puppies in the flesh.

I got myself a Dopod U1000, and it works flawlessly with all the Australian networks. This device rocks! Got a 1 GB datapack from Virgin for just $10 per month. Now, surfing internet on the move with this 5" screen really has become a brand new experience for me. Installed Microsoft Voice Command, and plan to get a bluetooth headset for voice calling. It's a great MP3 player and movie player, with the hugh storage and large screen. Trying out OfficeMaker now, giving full desktop word and spreadsheet editing funtionalitis on this tiny notebook. With HSDPA connection, I get good effect with internet radios and televisons most of the time. Optus' downloaded speed is about 1/2 that of Telstra's according to my test - so the movies could be a bit choppy at times, but I can't complaine given the extremely good deal from Virgin. The 3 MP camera is fantastic although you can't zoom in and out like normal camera. The GPS works with all the three GPS based appliations I installed. Carrying it around is not an issue as I hqve a belt pouch. I have so many ways of entering info that I don't find it a must to carry the keyboard with me. The push mail works great. Google map looks sensational on this screen. My VOIP (using PennytelP client on U1000 works perfectly although I'm still trying to eliminate a faint echo heard by the other party (my side is perfect). I have the wikippedia database (A TomeRaider3 file) stored locally so tjat I dont incur download charge when using it. My only dislike is the keyboard layout. It is very poorly designed and difficult to use. Otherwise, I'm so happy with this little wonder (Little. if you think of it as a notebook or TV) as well as big wonder (big, if you think of it as a phone and you do not intend to use blue tooth headset) nd I strongly recommend it to anyone.
Mr Gadget, you should stock this. I'm sure it would sell like hot cakes.
I was'nt planning to do a detailed review myself, but recommend this one done by Dave Evan in the Howard Forum:

| Nice to see someone on the forums picked one up. Id be inclined to agree with the 'little wonder' tag you attached to the device, but with the knowledge of the HTC Shift scheduled for release later in the year packing virtually all the features you could want in a portal UMPC/Phone device I think ill wait. |

| Actually I also like how thoroughly you tested the device on the networks. Your optus/Telstra comparisons would be pretty spot on too, because I could be wrong but im pretty sure Optus havent rolled out their HSDPA network, they are still using 2100/3G. Whereas Telstra of course is kicking it with the nextG/3.5G |

My guess would be that the detachable nature will give rise to a plethora of far superior keyboards in no time.

I'm a little peeved they didn't include a phone? wow...
