hi marian, you could ask the Mitac Mio Support to provide you the whole rom image file. but I can not say how hard it will be for you personally... I did this also some time ago because the rom inside a PNA ( Mio 268 ) was erased by the device itselfs (ROM Test Function, never do this!). I had to write at least 5 emails and pointed out that the device had damaged itselfs. finaly I ask them to talk to my legal practitioner and then they was able to send me this 32mb file. lets hope that you are more successful in less mailing transfer. if I find any rom image, I will let you know. regards |

Hi again,
this all is very frustrating, I know it by myself. Perhaps the best way to fix the device is to carry it to your dealer and just say "it spontaneously did only this and I dont know why it happend". I guess you still have warranty on it and if you didnt "hack" something (what can be visually seen), the dealer will swap it or at least send the device back to repair service. this sould not take much long time, I send one Mio168 back to replace the touchscreen panel due to broken glass and it took almost 7 days to return.
even if you dont have any dealer, the Mio support sould give you some RMA number to provide a repair service. in this case a personal telephone call would do better then emailing.
regards

Hi marian, I found some link with Mio A701 firmware images. I dont know if the Mio A701 is compatible to the Mio A201 of yours. http://u2.sharebig.com/share.php?id=s6bgeociig4sN37w Sometimes the A701 and A201 are written in the same line and seems to be nearly compatible. PLEASE read carefully and dont flash the wrong image, I can not guarantee if this images will work on your A201 unit! Regards |

Hello,
I have a MEDION 95000 pocket pc with german ROM. And I want to upgrade it with english ROM. But I have the following problem: I have found couple of english ROMs. I have backed up mine ROM (just to test). Than I made the following steps:
1. formated SD card in FAT16 file system (under Windows) 2. copied BIN file "WinCeImg.bin" onto SD card 3. made hard reset and pressed the joystick 4. got into the menu "Upgrade Tool V1.4" screenshot and select choise #1[WinCE Image (SD/MMC)] 5. pocket pc freezed down, I had been waiting for 6 hours but nothing has happened 6. when formating SD card, STORADGE TOOLS in FAT16 (in Pocket PC) and go againg through steps 2,3,4...there are shown with red fond "Imagesize too large! Any key to continue" on the screen
Step 6 happened with all the english ROMs and with the one I have backed up (the original one).
P.S. My MEDION 95000 is Cloning to MIO168.
Thank you for your help in advance!!!
With my best regards,
B-r-a-v-e
P.S. ROM is here

Hi, first of all, be 100% sure that the image fits your unit!! if not, you could get (only) a white screen with normal OS operations. in worst case, the whole unit is without any function and you have to reflash via jtag! do you know what display hardware is inside the device? this is very important! if the reset key is close to the headphone connector, it is a NEC screen (most Mio168 clones do have this) with Upgrade Tool V1.1 and V0.5/V0.2 if the reset key is very close to the record key, it is a SHARP screen (not very often shipped) with Uptrade Tool V2.1 NOT compatible to any other versions! a freezing Upgrade Tool (V 1.4 was never seen by myselfs!) indicates in most cases an incompatible sd-card for the upgrade tool. the upgrade tool must handel the sd-access by itselfs and can not use the win-ce dll's or routines. some cards dont wort in UT, try another one, maybe an older 256mb card could do better. the upgrade tool also can handle fat32 partition format. via a com1 console cable the UT shows some more informations and points out: "Found FAT32 Filesystem" until now i only have seen german rom's for the Sharp version (UT V2.1), from Typhoon and BlueMedia, also there is only WM2003 (not SE) available for this units.

Hi,
same important question to you: What display type is in your unit? - NEC Display, reset button about 2cm above the headphone connector (UT V0.2, 0.5, 1.1...) - SHARP Display, reset button very close to the record button (UT V2.1)

could you please make a backup from the german rom with Upgrade Tool V1.4? This version could be interresting for me and some other Mio168 owners. If yes, I can give you a link to load the image up. Thanks ahead.

Hi, I'm asking for the service manual, because a friend has a Yakumo Delta 300 with white screen and no beep tone at poweron. We think that either an IC is damaged (because there is sometinh like a small bubble on it, it's placed below the GPS module) or the flash is corrupted. We hope that the service manual contains a schematic to identify the IC. Second option would be to try JTAG and flash the IPL. The Yakumo has a NEC display. So does anybody have a download link for the service manual of MIO168 or Yakumo Delta 300? Thanks a lot. |

Sorry, my fault. Unfortunately in the service manual is nothing to find about any schematics! If any IC shows some appearance of "bubble" or "crater" it could be caused by overheating, overvoltaging or some kind of short cut pins. Often caused due to contact with water, rain or some fluids. This IC has to be replaced, I guess it is the IC named U19: NEC L5028223K1. If this is so, it is the Display Pixel Timer IC.
I dont know how to get an replacement for any of this PDA chips, but I do have a broken PCB (mainboard) from a NEC based PDA, the CPU is damaged but all other components are fine. Maybe we can arrange something to fix the PDA.

Hi, it's not U19, it's an IC with 10 pins with the print "45TI" or "47TI" on it (don't know exactly at the moment, I have to check again), sitting below the GPS module. Maybe I can take a photo next week. If you have a broken PCB, maybe you could solder out such an IC? How much would it cost? Please send PM, thank you. Anyway, the service manual would be very interesting to me, because I would like to read the details about JTAG. |

Hi, now I understand, it should be this nasty little chip: ... An outsoldering is possible but I life in germany and in a second thought dont know how to send anything half arround the world (if you live in australia). The only service manual I have is printed in german and there is nothing mentioned about fixing hardware or reflashing via JTAG. Not even how to replace the internel battery because this has to be done by some "service lab" and not by the user itself. Somewhere in this thread JTAG flashing can be found. Until now I did not use jtag by myself, but it is possible. The most complex part is to solder 5 hair-size wires to 0.5mm sized SMD resistors near the CPU and connect them via 300 Ohm resistors with the PC's parallel port. The required jtag flash tools are free to download for dos/win and linux. |

G'day Guys,
I've been looking at trying to upgrade a MIO 136 with MIO 168 Rom just to see how it would go and to see if I can then install later version of Navigation Software etc.
I've sucessfully made a dump of the MIO 136 Rom and have successfully been about to Reload/Burn the ROM back via the Update Tool v1.1.
Now When I try to Burn and MIO 168 ROM Image via "5-CE+UT - Image (SD/MMC)" I keep getting and error "Invalid file flag". I've tried a couple of MIO 168 rom images such as ENG and FRENCH, but same error.
I've trolled through this thread and have found only 1 reference to "invalid file flag" but the person did not get a response
Please if any one could help me out here I would be most greatful. Even if it with advice to maybe try a differen ROM (ie MIO 138, or MIO 23 .
I would even be happy if I could even just install a fresh WinCE, so I could use it like a PDA instead of being stuck with the 3 options ("Settings, Navigate or MP3Player"). This may then allow me to install other navigation software.
Regards Mark

Hello Mark, this "invalid file flag" problem appears because the Image is incompatible to the Mio136 Hardware. If the flash process would start, the device could not work with this "strange" firmware. I also tried this to make a PNA to full PDA with the same result. BEST in Mio based PNA is the static Upgrade Tool. It is placed into a seperated (Flash?) ROM and will not be erased while flashing. In Mio(136) PDA the whole ROM Image will be erased and replaced while flashing. So the original Upgrade Tool i.e. V1.1 also will be replaced by the version inside the flash image file. That's the reason why some devices show a white screen only after flashing a wrong image. If you want my advise: Dont mess around with the Image files! Best way to make a PNA more useful is to activate the Desktop (showtaskbar.exe) and try to make some programs running with additional "fakedll's". The media player "BetaPlayer" for example works fine in WinCE 4.x, much better then this build-in thing.

Hi iondarie, if the device shows a white screen and a view moments after turning on the windows ce bing-sound appears, you can reflash the rom image with the matching display type (NEC in your case). If the whole screen is black with no background lights and no sound at all, its the worst case and I think the only way to make the unit work again, is to flash via JTAG interface. This is very tricky because one have to open the PDA and solder 5 wires to very small (0.5mm) SMD resistors. Also build a JTAG interface to the PC parallel port... I hope its the first case, this can be recoverd in about 15 minutes. Write PM for more infos. |
