Although the new ROMs support ActiveSync over Bluetooth much better, its still not entirely intuitive. Here is a step by step guide!

This guide is currently in Draft status - please supply any feedback via our Discussion Thread at the end of this article

Bluetooth on the XDA II - also known as the i-mate Pocket PC Phone, and QTek 2020, and all based off HTC Himalaya hardware - is a tricky subject. If you're using an early ROM version - such as the initial release of 1.03, you will very likely need additional software to permit ActiveSync to work reliably. For ROM versions such as O2 Asia's 1.60 and better, though, the functionality is built into the ROM, although not entirely obvious for the end user. This guide will attempt to help you setup Bluetooth ActiveSync on a 1.60 or better ROM, since it's a recurrent theme in our forums.

The guide assumes that you have not previously bonded your XDA II with your PC. If you have, you will need to delete the bond at both ends in order to ensure success.

The guide also assumes you have a level of familiarity with Windows XP (and are running SP2), and at least passing familiarity with your XDA II's capabilities.

The method of setting up at your computer end will vary according to which Bluetooth stack you have. Ensure that your computer offers an "incoming" COM port, and set ActiveSync to use that COM port for Serial connections. As an example, we will use the Bluetooth stack included with Windows XP Service Pack 2, which has been tested to work well with ActiveSync connections. To some extent these procedures should be able to be used for other software - but I'll add other software if required.

  1. If Bluetooth is not integrated into your notebook (as is the case with many), ensure your Bluetooth dongle or adapter is plugged into your computer and recognised by the operating system. You will see - or should see - a small Bluetooth logo in your PC's taskbar (bottom right) .. if you're not sure what this looks like, here it is: The Bluetooth icon in the task bar
  2. Double click on the Bluetooth icon. Under Windows XP SP2, you will see a Bluetooth Devices dialog. Click on the Options tab, and you will see a screen like that pictured below.
The Windows XP SP2 Bluetooth Options tab
  3. Ensure you select "Turn discovery on" so that it is ticked, and click "Apply". Then click on the COM Ports tab.
  4. The dialog will be blank, but you will have the option to add ports. Click on the Add button and you will see the following dialog.
    Add a Bluetooth COM Port
  5. Ensure that "Incoming" is selected, and click OK.
  6. You should now see an incoming port configured in your COM Ports tab. For me, it appears as COM6, but this may be dependent on hardware. Take note of the COM port you have configured and click OK.
  7. If you have not already installed ActiveSync - or haven't upgraded it to the latest version (3.71 build 4034), you should do so. You can download ActiveSync from here - ensure you install it prior to proceeding.
  8. Restart your computer. This must be done to ensure ActiveSync recognises your new COM port.
  9. Right click on the ActiveSync icon in your toolbar (The ActiveSync icon) and select Connection Settings.
Selecting your COM Port in ActiveSync Connection Settings
  10. Ensure "Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM Port" is ticked, and choose the COM port you created before from the drop-down list. Click OK.
  11. On your XDA II / i-mate, go to Settings, System tab, and select Bluetooth Settings. In the ActiveSync section, tap the Setup button.
The XDA II Bluetooth Settings dialog box
  12. It will prompt you to bond - click OK and you will be taken to the Bluetooth screen. Ensure Bluetooth is set to On, then tap on the Devices tab. Tap New to search.
  13. At the end of the search, you should be presented with a list of discovered devices. One of these should be your PC name, so select it and tap Next.
    Entering your PIN
  14. Enter a device pin - this can be any pin you like if your XDA II is at its defaults. Tap Next.
  15. You will then be prompted to allow the connection on your PC. Click the balloon and then enter the same pin as entered on your XDA II. Click Next.
  16. On your XDA II, you will be prompted for a name for your PC. Accept the default and tap Finish. Tap OK to close the Bluetooth applet, then tap OK to close the Bluetooth Settings.
  17. On your PC, you should see a "Completing the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard" dialog. Leave the "Turn discovery off" checkbox ticked and click Finish.
    Bluetooth Device Wizard complete!
  18. On your XDA II, browse to, and launch, the ActiveSync application, which you will find either in your Start Menu or in the Programs folder.
  19. Tap Tools, Connect via Bluetooth. Your XDA II should connect to your PC via Bluetooth and commence either synchronization or the Partnership Wizard (depending upon whether you've previously partnered with the PC).  You will use this method each time you want to synchronize via Bluetooth.
  20. You should now be done! If you had any issues during the setup, and can't connect, clear your bonds and try again. If you still have issues - let us know and we'll try to help!
